The Lognormal Distribution in Environmental Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Technology Support Projects, Technology Support Center (TSC) for Monitoring and Site Characterization was established in 1987 as a result of an agreement between the Office of Research and Development (ORD), the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) and all ten Regional Offices. The objectives of the Technology Support Project and the TSC were to make available and provide ORD's state-of-the-science contaminant characterization technologies and expertise to Regional staff, facilitate the evaluation and application of site characterization technologies at Superfund and RCRA sites, and to improve communications between Regions and ORD Laboratories. The TSC identified a need to provide federal, state, and private environmental scientists working on hazardous waste sites with a technical issue paper that identifies data assessment applications that can be implemented to better define and identify the distribution of hazardous waste site contaminants. The examples given in this Issue paper and the recommendations provided were the result of numerous data assessment approaches performed by the TSC at hazardous waste sites. Mr. John Nocerino provided guidance and suggestions that greatly enhanced the quality of this Issue Paper. This paper was prepared by A. K. Singh, A. Singh, and M. Engelhardt. Support for this project was provided by the EPA National Exposure Research Laboratory's Environmental Sciences Division with the assistance of the Superfund Technical Support Projects Technology Support Center for Monitoring and Site Characterization, OSWER’s Technology Innovation Office, the U.S. DOE Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, and the Associated Western Universities Faculty Fellowship Program. A Recursive Approximation Approach of non-iid Lognormal Random Variables Summation in Cellular Systems
Co-channel interference is a major factor in limiting the capacity and link quality in cellular communications. As the co-channel interference is modeled by lognormal distribution, sum of the co-channel interferences of neighboring cells is represented by the sum of lognormal Random Variables (RVs) which has no closed-form expression. Assuming independent, identically distributed (iid) RVs, the...
متن کاملManufacturing Firm Size Distribution in Iran Evidence from Food & Beverages and Non-Metallic Mineral Products
Empirical studies have shown that the size distribution of firms can be described as a lognormal or Pareto distribution. However, these studies have focused on developed countries and little attention has been devoted to developing countries. Using the variable of number of employees as a measure of firm size, this paper investigates the shape of firm size distribution in the food & beverages i...
متن کاملAnalysis of Hybrid Censored Data from the Lognormal Distribution
The mixture of Type I and Type II censoring schemes, called the hybrid censoring. This article presents the statistical inferences on lognormal parameters when the data are hybrid censored. We obtain the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) and the approximate maximum likelihood estimators (AMLEs) of the unknown parameters. Asymptotic distributions of the maximum likelihood estimators are used ...
متن کاملFrequency Analysis of Maximum Daily Rainfall in various Climates of Iran
In this research in order to frequency analysis of maximum daily rainfall in various climates of Iran the data of 40 synoptic rain gauges collected in 40 years period i.e., 1973 to 2012 were used. These stations are located in various climates of Iran according to De Martonne climatic classification. At first, input of data to HYFA package was performed. The mentioned package includes seven...
متن کاملTables And Characteristics of the Standardized Lognormal Distribution
While lognormal distributions have demonstrated great utility in a number of applications related to decision sciences, practitioners find few – if any – tables of its cumulative distribution function available to support their work. This paper describes a “standardized” form of the lognormal distribution and a methodology by which tables of its cumulative distribution function can be generated...
متن کاملOn the Existence and Uniqueness of the Maximum Likelihood Estimators of Normal and Lognormal Population Parameters with Grouped Data
Lognormal distribution has abundant applications in various fields. In literature, most inferences on the two parameters of the lognormal distribution are based on Type-I censored sample data. However, exact measurements are not always attainable especially when the observation is below or above the detection limits, and only the numbers of measurements falling into predetermined intervals can ...
